Genre Research: The Killing of a Sacred Deer

I watched The Killing of a Sacred Deer about a year ago with my two older brothers. While sitting down and watching it we were confused almost throughout the entire movie. Each of us making stabs in the dark about the storyline and where it was going to lead. All the guests were reasonable, yet none of them prepared us for the ending. I was a bit unsure about how I felt at the end of the movie, but I did know I liked it. I love those physiological thrillers that make you feel completely in the dark. The unsettling atmosphere of the whole movie impacted the viewers considerably. When watching this movie you really have to listen to the words spoken, rather than the tone they are spoken in. One element of the genre that didn't really appeal to was the unsettling tone of the actors. Because at some points it made it difficult to understand the storyline. But on the other side, it was what I loved most about the movie. Because at the end you really see the character's own self-interest take priority over everything else. The monotone voices make the outcome so much more intense. Even their family added to the unsettling plot. Some elements of the genre that this movie had that I loved is how engaging and interesting it kept me. No matter how confusing, in the end, it made sense but yet left me with so many questions. The actors in this movie perfectly executed the story. The mother's tone when even suggesting to sacrifice one of their kids because they can always make more was absolutely bone-chilling. The actors' execution of displaying a complete disregard for their own families' lives was perfect. All the actors fit the roles so perfectly, its a relief when something is so rich with intelligence.
