Research Blog: Commercial Conventions
I'm doing a Gatorade commercial. In these Gatorade commercials, the audience will typically see athletes taking part in physical activities like (running, or a sort of sport such as volleyball, and etc).
- In these commercials, their costumes constantly contain their sports uniforms, such as a football player with football gear, a soccer player with soccer cleats, or a volleyball player with knee pads. They wear the appropriate apparel for their sport or physical activity such as running and wearing tight breathable pants, sneakers, and a breathable shirt.
- They usually use props that correlate to the physical activity being exhibited in the commercial, such as footballs, soccer balls, and tennis rackets. Other times in their commercials they depict them working out, so they'd have towels, protein bars, jump ropes, and weights.
- The appearance of the people in the commercials are always fit and lean with an athletic build. While doing their physical activity they're usually glistening from the sweat and the women tend to have their hair up.
- The settings are usually in a field, court, gym, or outside. They really want to exemplify the physically draining actions that can only be energized by an ice-cold bottle of Gatorade.
- The music in these Gatorade commercials are usually intense and empowering. The music is lowered a bit when the actor/athletes are talking but still manage to contain that power that makes the audience feel hyped.
- When it comes to the script, it tends to be very short and quick little phrases that inspire you to take some action. The acting is just being realistic and convincing in your movements to represent athletes hard at work training for their goals.
- You'll usually see a professional athlete as one of the actors in a Gatorade commercial since they're the epitome of hard work and training. The use of ethos in their commercials adds a greater impact on the audience.
- Some camera angles commonly used to help the intensity of Gatorade commercials are high, low, and canted/dutch angles. Some common movements are 360-degree, zoom, and crane, which help with the powerful fast-paced movement of these commercials.
- Conventions like the infamous Gatorade symbol of the G with an orange lightning bolt through it is what makes their brand so popular and recognizable. They have many slogans but the ones that are the most distinguishable are "Is it in you", "Life is a sport", "Thirst quencher", or "Win from within"
